Blog for Choice Day - January 22, 2007  Today is the 34th Anniversary of Roe v Wade.

I am pro-choice because:

1) I believe the ability to decide if and when to carry a pregnancy to term is vital for women to be able to take control of and define their own lives.  I trust women to make their own decisions.  I cannot make that decision for anyone else, and no one else can make it for me.
2) I never want myself, my sister, my friends, or my hypothetical future daughter to have to contemplate a back alley abortion.  Making it illegal doesn't make it go away.
3) I enjoy sex.  Because I do not believe sex is 'dirty,' amoral, or anyone else's business.  Because I do not believe the sole purpose of sex is procreation.  Because I believe everyone has a right to enjoy their body.  And because I do not believe women should be punished for sharing these beliefs.
4) My uterus and every other part of my reproductive system, as well as the body it is encased in, belongs to me and me alone.  It is not the property of my parents, boyfriend, husband, hospital, church, or government.  Anything living within it does so at my discretion and with my permission.
5) My religous beliefs are my own.  Your religous beliefs are your own.  I cannot impose mine on you and you cannot impose your's on me.
6) Women still die during childbirth.
7) I believe in comprehensive, scientifically based sex education and unrestricted access to contraception, including emergency contraception.  Attacks on abortion access lead to attacks on contraception access, which leads to a demand for back alley abortions.

Believing in choice means that I support women who want to carry preganancies to term, who want to put their child up for adoption, who want to raise their child on their own, who want to end unwanted pregnancies, who use birth control, who demand access to EC, who use reproductive technologies to increase their chance of getting pregnant, who want to have 6 kids, who want to have no kids, who have their first child at 18, who have their first child at 37.  It means that each individual woman has the ability to control their reproduction to suit their own beliefs and goals in life.  Choice means exactly that...options.

Guess we've gone over some of my thoughts on this topic.

right on. i know girls who threw themselves down stairs cuz they were too afraid to talk to their parents about abortion and couldn't get to the clinic themselves (i am from a farm town). and i know girls who's boyfriends beat them till they aborted. if "we" (as in the USA) outlaw abortion, then this will happen not only to girls but to adult women too. not to mention the back alley abortions that would take place. and then chances are it won't just be the fetus that dies but also the mother, from infection or blood loss. so does that really make it pro-life? i agree with you completely.
my brother is a priest and he says that when in a time of crisis (such as rape or whatnot) women should know not to kill a fetus. but in a time of crisis, humans naturally panic. he said human emotion should not play a part in this decision making. i told him that if he thinks he can order the end to abortions, then he better find a way to alter human psychology overnight. it's impossible. he had no response. he also thinks birth control is wrong. so i explained how MOST women use it for medical reason, i.e. to end horrible pains. he had no reponse once again, as he had not researched this.
I do not believe that abortion should be used as birth control. people should be responsible for their actions. but there are situations that can not be controlled, such as rape and incest. Outlawing abortion will only make the matter worse.
we need to educate kids on the realities of life without using the "scare tactics" that they can see through.
it is my body and i control it. not that idiot G.W. Bush.

with love, Scarlett
