When I first signed up I knew absolutly nothing about blogging, and now that I know a little more I don't really think xanga is the best format. I might still update from time to time, we'll see. For now I'm going to give the following link a try. It seems to be a little more flexible (without costing me anything) and it allows comments from anyone (something I keep waiting for xanga to get around to.) So feel free to come visit. I still intend to keep up with my subscriptions here and maybe even comment now and then .

Have a great weekend!

http://missefish.blogspot.com/ My eyes have been slightly less irritable lately and I was hoping that I could get my prescription updated so that if I had to be wearing my glasses at least I would be able to see through them. No such luck. My left eye has suffered the brunt of this and I guess its taken its toll. "I can't give you glasses." There simply is no lens that can fix the vision in that eye. "The best I could do is maybe 20/40."

I've got two new bottles of eye drops that I'm using every hour. My eye's still have a lot of healing to do and the hope is that in time the vision in the left eye will start to come back and match the vision in the right eye. I have to do these eyelid massages twice a day (for the rest of my life) because apparently some of the glands along my eye lid that are supposed to be lubricating my eye and helping the healing process aren't working. One of the bottles of eyedrops is apparently also going to become a "for life" staple of my routine. I'm practicing blinking so that it will be more effective when my glands start working again. I have to look away and consciously blink every time I read a line on a computer screen. I guess putting little pieces of plastic in your eyes every day for 13 years is bound to have an effect...

I've got another appointment this Saturday. We're going to talk about new contact lens options for when my eyes are actually strong enough to attempt them again. Hopefully there will be some evidence of progress on the healing front. I don't know what will happen with the glasses. For now I'm just "tolerating them a little longer." I watched the super bowl without being able to read jersey numbers, the time on the clock, or the score. White blobs vs black blobs.

Friday, February 02, 2007

Even Punxsutawney Phil has taken note of global warming... Groundhog predicts early spring.

"Phil did not see his shadow on Friday, which, according to German folklore, means folks can expect an early spring instead of six more weeks of winter. Since 1886, Phil has seen his shadow 96 times, hasn't seen it 15 times and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The last time Phil failed to see his shadow was in 1999."

So..I'm sure people will disagree with me, but as far as I can tell winter only started in PA a few weeks ago (not a snowflake to be seen and disturbingly green looking grass when I was up for New Year's) so I find this concerning. I mean, obviously Phil is always right, and if this is all the winter we're going to get surely there must be a reason?

oh yeah... News from Paris

Happy Groundhog's Day!!

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

It's that time of year...

State of the Union Drinking Game

Monday, January 22, 2007

I let the vacuum cleaner salesman into the house thinking he worked for a carpet cleaning company, as the only thing he seemed to want to talk about while standing on the porch was how he would shampoo the carpet for free. He only shampooed the carpet after two hours of explaining all the wonderful features of his vacuum (kirby) acting very surprised that I have no idea what a kirby is (it has a power wash attachment, light bulb changing attachment, and ceiling fan cleaning attachment), informing me (us, ok Patrick) about all the wonderful creatures that live in our mattress, and showing us the list of prizes he could get for selling a certain amount of vacuums.

He made a few mistakes. One, he assumed I (we) care about our dirty carpet. Now granted, Jack's a hairball, but his hair blends nicely with the multi-colored textured carpet and my vision isn't great so its fairly easy for me to ignore this. To my knowledge no one in the house has major allergy/respiratory problems. I live with boys. No one is real concerned with the dirt. The vacuum only gets run when I'm expecting company, and then really only if I think there might be reason for someone to sit on the floor. I think the vacuum has been run 3 times in the 7 months we live here. Go ahead and call me dirty. You probably wouldn't notice if I hadn't just told you.

Two, he seemed to imply that I should find vacuuming enjoyable. "Go ahead, try it. See how easy it moves! Go ahead, try it out in the bedroom. Vacuum the whole mattress if you like. Isn't that fun?!" No, its a vacuum cleaner. If there was something fun about it I would probably vacuum more than 3 times in 7 months and I probably wouldn't have to bribe Patrick into it. A better approach would have been "vacuuming sucks and I'm sure you want to get it over with as fast as possible. With the superior suction of this machine you can vacuum in half the time and half as often with the same results. Its also shiny and has lots of gadgets so its also easier to coerce males into pushing it around!"

Three, I let him in the door, agreed to the demonstration, and handed over my contact information. However, as soon as Patrick appeared the conversation became directed at him. I don't shop at Circuit City for this very reason. Salesperson's, do NOT assume that just because a male is present that he is the one with the (greater) buying power. Do NOT assume that he is better able to understand what you are talking about. All you do is anger lots of women, and lots of women have considerable checking accounts and credit limits. If I really wanted that vacuum I could have bought it today and not maxed out a single card. I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure Patrick would have had a harder time. Pissing me off when I make my own purchasing decisions is not a good move.

He also mentioned that he gets paid $25 per demonstration and has been making close to $250 a day, so I can rest easy tonight knowing his 4 year old son won't starve because I'm stingy.

The guy was friendly enough, and the carpet is much cleaner. Which is nice 'cause I certainly wasn't going to shampoo it. He even got out a good bit of the stain from Jack's charcoal eating adventure. But it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to spend $2000 (though he offered to bring it down to $1300) for a machine that performs a chore that I hate. Sure, I felt really dirty (well, just mostly embarrassed) as he sat there pulling all the dirt out of the carpet, but I can live with that. Besides, dirts good for the immune system.

(And to tell you the honest truth, I'm already disturbingly in love with the Dyson. And its only $500.)

Friday, December 22, 2006

Happy Global Orgasm for Peace Day!!!

I'm baffled and appalled by this Miss USA thing. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this is important. Could anyone even tell me this woman's name a week ago? And now she's interrupting news coverage of Mt. Hood and the Middle East to thank Donald Trump for allowing her to keep her crown. Publicity stunt. Plain and simple.

I read this story Who cares about Miss USA?

The first thing that makes it terribly obvious that this isn't important is that most of the commentators don't seem to understand that Miss USA and Miss America are two different individuals. If these pageants were really important to American life I think the general public would realize there are two of them.

The second thing that bothered me was this comment:

"Just ONE more reason for the state of Kentucky to look bad. I do not want my child to look up to someone like Tara. We need role models. It's bad enough that Hollywood has turned into a drug infested hole. If our children can't look up to actors or Miss USA, who's left? I think she needed more than just a slap on the wrist. Make an example out of her! This just lets the future contestants think "Well she got away with it, so will I."

So your child's only role models are actors are and beauty pageant (scholarship contest?) winners? Then your problems go way beyond this. You know who my role models were/are? My parents. My grandparents. Teachers. Girlscout leaders. Actual real people who I interacted with who showed me what it meant to be a good person and to make a difference in real people's lives. Who's left?!? YOU! Celebrities should not be raising your children. If you're a good person and you surround your children with good people that should be all the role model they need.

Of course there is my problem with beauty contests in general. Look gorgeous. Present yourself as a sex object (here, parade around in this skimpy bikini). Remain chaste. Never appear to date. Do not party. Present yourself as 'the perfect woman', pure, innocent, naive. Barf.

This woman is being punished for being real, for not living up to some man's ideal of what a woman should be (and as far as the public condemning her, all we've been given is rumor. Oh my god she might have kissed another girl! The horror!). The way I would have preferred this to go down is if Tara Conner would have got on the news, broken the crown in half, and told Donald Trump to kiss her ass its her life and no stupid title is worth giving that up. (Of course, then she would have lost her fancy New York apartment and probably ended up back in Kentucky, and I can completely understand why she wouldn't want that to happen.)

Wretch wretch wretch. The country will be a better place when Miss USA and Miss America no longer exist. (And little girls are turning to their mothers, female business women, female community volunteers, and a female president as their role models.)
